The Struggle and Success of Paul Marciano

Paul Marcina born in 1952 in Debdou, Morocco in a Jewish family and was raised in Marseilles, France together with his four siblings who are Armand, Georges, Jacqueline and Maurice. 

Paul came from a long family of rabbis. His father was a rabbi born in 1954 until 1986 in Marseilles. They also grew up in an apartment located in a synagogue complex and the Jewish Boy Scouts that all the brothers were members of and were under the synagogue.

When Paul became 15, Paul and a friend of his were involved in a motorcycle accident to when they were actually crushed by a speeding vehicle. After he was told that he could not walk again, he then spent seven months in a wheelchair. He then regained a full use of his limbs again after a year and a half, but he was no longer accepted again in school because of the long absence. In 1973, Paul Marciano had his first success, which led to the opening of their company which was MGA - Maurice, Georges, Armand. They then opened their very first store in 1973 in Bandol located on a side street and in an old fish store. They continue on with their blouses and then start to manufacture dresses like what they did with blouses that comes with one size, style but in different fabrics and prints. They continue in making pants and jeans as well. They also started selling stonewashed jeans in 1976 and already have 20 stores at that time. 

In 1981, Guess was started by Georges and Maurice first. On the other hand, Paul and Armand were managing retail operations of MGA, which already had 4 stores in the U.S. They later on joined Guess after several months. 

The name of Guess actually came from Georges while the brothers were driving to work together and saw a huge billboard saying "GUESS what's in the new big mac?". The big word was actually Guess, which is how Georges came up with the popular name. Maurcio then came up with the question mark. 

Back in 1982, Paul and Armand joined later on with their brothers. This is then when Paul had decided to do advertising for their company. At first he started with a low budget and asked for the help of their friends. After a year, their sales then reached $6 million. 

In 1993, Paul later on became the president as well as chief operating officer of Guess. In 2015, Paul Marciano stepped down as CEO of the said company, but became the Execute Chairman and still remained in Guess as a chief creative officer.
